FIT and MicroFIT

Ontario’s feed-in tariff and micro feed-in tariff (FIT or MicroFIT) program is North America’s first comprehensive guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production. It offers stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources. The greatest incentives are for solar.

The FIT and MicroFIT program was enabled by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 which was passed into law on May 14, 2009. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is responsible for implementing the program.

By encouraging the development of renewable energy in Ontario, the FIT Program will:

  • help Ontario phase out coal-fired electricity generation – the largest climate change initiative in Canada
  • boost economic activity and the development of renewable energy technologies
  • create new green industries and jobs

As per the Ontario Power Authority’s official MicroFiT website homepage:

The June 1, 2016 price schedule is now in effect (see table below). A new category has been created for rooftops systems 6kW and smaller. Applicants to the microFIT Program are reminded that their contract price will be based on the price schedule in effect at the time their Application Approval Notice is issued.

Please ensure that you regularly monitor your My microFIT Home Page for updates to your application status during the application process.

Current Price Schedule (for those with an Application Approval Notice after June 1, 2016):

Rooftop less than 6kW 31.3 cents/kWh
Rooftop less than 10kW 29.4 cents/kWh
Rooftop between 10kW and 100kW 24.2 cents/kWh
Rooftop between 100kW and 500kW 22.5 cents/kWh
Ground-mount less than 10kW 21.4 cents/kWh
Ground-mount between 10kW and 500kW 20.9 cents/kWh

MicroFIT:

The following is a list of eligible participants (please confirm your or your organization’s eligibility on the Ontario Power Authority’s website):

  • An individual such as a home or building owner
  • Farmer
  • Farm co-operative
  • Renewable energy co-operative
  • Municipality
  • Local Distribution Company
  • School, College or University
  • Hospital or long-term care home
  • Aboriginal community

If you or your organization qualifies as any of the above participants then you have the opportunity to develop a very small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts or less in size) on your building or property. Under the MicroFIT program, you will be paid a guaranteed price for all the electricity your project produces for at least 20 years, resulting in a guaranteed return on investment. Application is simple, free of charge and without obligation.

How to participate:

There are three key steps involved in participating in the microFIT Program:

Step 1: Submit an application and receive conditional offer

Step 2: Build and connect your project

Step 3: Accept your contract

FIT:

If you have a large rooftop or field like an industrial building or farm, you’ll want to apply for the FIT program to install greater than 10kW. Pricing structure offers lower incentives however economies of scale can be realized for returns on investment of up to 18%. Contact us to discuss feasibility and application process.
